When's The Last Time You Did Something For The First Time?

Is there any scenario that a Drake lyric can’t perfectly summarize?

I’ve yet to encounter one honestly, and this post is no exception. Our beloved Champagne Papi makes an interesting and almost philosophical point in his 2013 hit “Own It”.

When was the last time you did something for the first time? Did something that scared you? Or did something completely outside of your comfort zone?

What’s interesting is that throughout our development from youth into adulthood, we are constantly experiencing new things and overcoming first time obstacles. Almost as if new experiences are fundamental for our health.

Then, at a certain point, we just stop.

What changed? Aren’t we still capable of doing extraordinary things? Of course we are, but somewhere along the line our tolerance for the unknown starts to diminish. Guess what though? No growth ever came from someone remaining in their comfort zone.

So let me sprinkle a few gems on you by sharing four incredible reasons trying something new is oh so good for you.

Meet New People

Venturing outside of your comfort zone can be a fantastic way to expand your social circle. If your current friends are never down for the things you want to do, go alone. Wandering out by yourself is a growing experience of its own, but think of the possible new relationships. I mean you already know you’ll have at least one thing in common.  Now that solo rock climb has turned into a happy hour meetup. Win Win.

Spice Up Your Life

Have you ever woken up feeling like your life was on autopilot? Wake up, go to work, and repeat. Doing the same thing day in and day out can not only lead to complacency, but it can also suck the passion and creativity right out of you. People who try new things often experience more bouts of creativity and also benefit from improved self worth and confidence.

Strengthens Your Resilience

I’m sure by this point we’re all familiar with the ever popular quote “Feel the fear and do it anyway”. But did you know that people who try new things are less likely to suffer from anxiety when s*** hits the fan? This is due to the fact that people who aren’t afraid to try new things tend to be more malleable. The scientific term for this is neuroplasticity. Simply put, our brains benefit from exercises that challenge what we already know. Learning a new skill, language, or even getting lost in a new city will fuel your brain with maximum gains. Now that’s a flex.

Personal Growth

If you’re like me, you probably have a favorite restaurant, favorite perfume, favorite drink, or even a favorite travel destination so you good huh? But how do you know it’s still your favorite if you aren’t actively exposing yourself to the best life has to offer? It’s like being content with $15 an hour when you know it’s possible to make $30. Do not play yourself like that.

As often as you can, try new foods and visit new places to expose yourself to a new level of thinking. Keeping the same perspective today that you had 10 years ago is honestly a disservice to yourself.

It’s my personal life philosophy that “you have to go through it in order to grow through it” so get going!

Summary

Trying new things can broaden your social circle, improve your brain health, increase your life satisfaction, and even cause you to level up in ways you couldn’t even imagine. Stop letting fear inhibit your growth sis!

Get out, like NOW NOW,  and sign up for something you’ve been putting off for far too long. Thank me later.
